I recently got an e-mail from someone who was a bit hesitant about joining my announcement list, because she didn't want her e-mail address known (obviously by anyone apart from me). That's when I realized I need to put a privacy statement on the site.
I believe that people have a right to remain anonymous. I will never give anyone else my lists of e-mail addresses. There are ways of mailing people without revealing who the other people on your list are. I'll show you how on this page.
I was anonymous for several years on this site, so I really understand the need for anonymity. You do NOT have to be afraid I'll blab about your secrets or e-mail address.
My general rule is that e-mail addresses are not available for mailing lists except for when people write posts on discussion list - and introductions written by the members and meant for being shared. Subscription details on announcement lists are not available to anyone but me. So far I've done one mass mailing to people outside the mailing lists. All of the addresses were gathered from people who actually mailed me at one time - and I'd replied to these people as well when I originally received their mails.
I made a list in my e-mail program, and then put that list in the BCC (blind carbon copy) field. That field is sometimes hidden because it isn't used that much (ask a nerd or tech person for help if you can't figure it out). That's the only way to hide the other recipients from each other. The reason I'm telling you guys this, is because I've seen a lot of mailings from NA actors and other people (when I'm on their list), and I could have plucked e-mail addresses for famous people from their mails because they didn't hide the recipient list. Another thing, you shouldn't send frequent mailings to people who haven't requested you send them news or info. The best way is probably to make a www.onelist.com list, or some other automated list. That way people can decided whether or not they want to continue getting regular mailings from you.
Of course, when Rachael recently told people she was going on a trip and couldn't be on the net as much as she usually is, that was a good thing. It comes down to good sense when you should make a formal list and when you should just mail everybody in your address book (don't forget to use BCC!!!! instead of CC or the TO field).
That's what I did when I moved this site. I told them this was a list I wouldn't use unless there was a big emergency, and if they wanted to receive my regular mailings, they could subscribe to my list. I included details as to how they could do it.
The one exception to my general rule about not letting the members (or anyone else) see who's a member of a mailing lists is a list where the members asked for access to seing who was on the list, and I made it available after everybody had agreed and those who weren't talking were warned about what I was doing.
I've started building a rolodex with addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. My policy has been for a long time not to divulge contact information to anyone else unless authorized. I've extended that courtesy even to the fans except in certain circumstances 1) When they're trying to contact a celeb I've often forwarded their mails to either a contact of the celeb or the celeb. 2) When the info was left in a public forum, such as a message board etc. 3) I occasionally get disturbing mails, and do whatever is appropriate with them - depending on each situation.
The rolodex will be under lock and key, and I won't divulge the contents to anyone, except when asked to forward certain info by the owner of the info. Doesn't matter who is asking for that information. Same rules for everyone.
