We've all heard stories of the wild lives of the rock'n roll heroes. We may even think it's a thing of the past.

Wake up! It's going on even today. Why? Because the situations that created the monsters are still cropping up today.

Let's imagine a scenario: A young boy, one of our native heartthrobs, becomes immensely famous. Let's for argument's sake say he crosses over and rivals the popularity of Leonardo Di Caprio.

Drugs

What happens next? Well, for starters, the media frenzy will prompt his management to strike while he's hot. Instant success often lasts only as short while (in theory as opposed to a slowly climbing career). so the people who have a stake (read: percentages) in this guy will push him to make appearances left and right. That's so they an not only recoup their expenses, but make a bundle. They essentially own him if they've used a lot of money on him and tied him to a contract that reflects that. Pure business sense.

What usually happens with such young talent is that they eventually get exhausted. The body can take only so much. Of course, with wise management that may not happen. Still, because this is a young guy, nobody actually knows what his particular body can take. The older I get, the more I know about my own limits, while a young person might not know his breaking point, and will "crash and burn".

Enter the villain: This may be anyone around our hero. Seeing he is about to collapse, and knowing he has to make yet one more appearance, he opts for the punch line: "Hey, you don't look too hot today". Our hero acknowledges, and the villain goes on: "You know, you can't rest just yet, we still have ....... to do". Exasperated look from our hero. Villain: "Here, take this, it'll get you through the day". Hero:"It's not drugs, is it?". Villain: "No, relax. It's just coffein pills / vitamins / whatever.". Clue: Unless our hero buys this stuff at the pharmacy himself, he doesn't know exactly what's in those pills or that drink. Although the average person won't be physically hooked after one such episode, we shouldn't overlook the psychological effect. The rush, felling of omnipotence, etc.

Sex

I'm not sure you've seen the media frenzy over Leonardo. You can't go anywhere without seeing his face plastered on magazines left and right. Young girls especially are susceptible. Exposure to a good looking guy over and over might easily result in a crush. Even if it doesn't, you shouldn't underestimate the "catch" angle. Both guys and girls like being seen with someone sought after by others. It makes them feel popular. The result? Some girls (and boys) will do anything to get the likes of Leonardo into bed.

OK, we all know that, you say. Sure, but have you put yourself in our hero's shoes? What is it like to suddenly be the object of desire for thousands of girls/women? Let's say you weren't that popular with girls earlier, maybe even suffering from discrimination and ridicule. I'll tell you what it feels like when you come from that background and then becomes popular. You suddenly change. You used to be dumb and clumsy. Suddenly you're witty and attractive. This isn't just in your head. Your surroundings will see it too, and treat you differently (unless they're jealous - hoo boy!). Pretty soon you're king of the world. What happens then depends of your moral fabric and your ability to lay long time plans. Many boys will take what's offered to them, not giving it a second thought. These guys may eventually end up in the scandal rags. Sometimes they're even accused of rape (when you're irresistible even the thought of a girl meaning it when she says no, and not just doing it as part of game - won't enter your mind). Dangerous...

This isn't a "native scenario". The discrimination most natives go through may make them susceptible to misuse of their popularity, but (and I'm guessing here) since natives tend to respect their elders and their wisdom, a young boy with support from an elder with an understanding of the dynamics of fame may be spared these things. A lot hangs on the management and the other advisors too.

Please don't end up in court or detox, we need you to be examples for the young people who look up to you for hope and inspiration. (We have seen a lot of young stars being very active in trying to give back to the native community and work with the youngsters, giving them hope).

Reality check

(July 22nd 1998) Remember I used Leonardo Di Caprio as an example of young fame? Well, lately I've heard rumors in the media that he's sleeping with all the young models in New York. Him and the "Pussy Posse". Don't know if it's true, but it serves to prove my point. I originally wrote this article before I heard these rumors...

Disclaimer: Some of the material I've used for this "article" has been brewing since I read Man in Black by Johnny Cash many years ago. The death of River Phoenix also springs to mind. I have no personal direct knowledge of any native star living the kind of lifestyle I'm describing. It's just something anyone could have written had they thought about it. I'm not a player in the entertainment industry, so don't take this as inside information. I don't know for a fact that this could happen as I've described it, only that it has happened in the past, and is likely to happen again.

Eonline special: Drugs in Hollywood
According to what's in this article, my article is probably not as accurate for actors, but possibly for popstars, and others who travel a great deal? They say a major problem for stars is boredom, and a feeling of superiority (that they are too great to fall victim to drugs - larger than life...)
