How to contact a celebrity

Sometimes I get questions on how people can contact native artists, but other times I get questions on "does he have a fan mail address?", or "do you have any info on him?", "have you talked to his agent?". So far I haven't tried contacting agents, with so many actors I couldn't do it with everyone anyway. However, if your goal is to get info on current projects, a publicity photo, an address fans can write to, and your NOT trying to track this actor down no matter what, a lot of agents may want to give you info. It depends on how you come across, as far as I can tell from what people have told me. The saner you are, the more info you're likely to get... More on contacting celebrities below.

I would be really grateful if you would send me the info you get, maybe ask the agent if it's OK to put the info online, and ask if there's anything that shouldn't be online. Many times the agent would be happy to let us use publicity photos, bios and resumes online. Sort of, they're in control of the online info and photos... Give'em my homepage address if you like, because I'm always interested in putting more homepages online. If you want to make a homepage yourself with the stuff instead, give me YOUR homepage address, and I'll link to it.

I got a lot of questions in the beginning on "how do I contact xxx to ask if he would participate in a pow wow/charity/whatever?", and I got tired of answering each question individually. A lot easier referring to a page online.

There are various ways you can try. The most common is to send snail mail to the production company of one of the movies an actor has appeared in. They will pass it on. Another way is if you can locate the agent of an actor. If the actor is still active, and even sometimes if he isn't, he will have an agent, and he will also have a Screen Actors Guild card. That means they'll have information on file at SAG (Phone numbers and stuff). There are other agencies as well. ACTRA and Equity in Canada? I'm not sure if they''ll give you the contact info for the agent no questions asked, but it's likely that you'll get the info. In one case the agent's name and phone no was given in an IMDb entry. Many actors have fan mail addresses (you cant get their private address this way, because these addresses are designed to protect the celebrity, and still make it easy to send fan mail to them).

Ordinarily you won't get any direct contact information for the actor from the agent, but if you send stuff for the agent to see he may take an interest and show it to the actor (only valid for "important" stuff). Anyone can be found, but you have to have contacts in the business or people who knows a particular person to be able to get in touch with a celebrity directly. Even then they are usually protected from outsiders. I don't know what the celebrities themselves think about being approached. It's on my list of things I want to ask celebrities. I suspect it depends on the person. Some of the actors are very approachable on the internet, because they feel they can protect themselves on the net easier than any other way of contact. They're also more likely to feel more relaxed in non-threatening situations.

For some it's also a question of where it's possible to find out what movies he's been in, and what company made them?. The answer is IMDb (The Internet Movie Databank). Then search the web or phone databases for snail mail addresses.

I have found that the most reliant source of information on native actors is The Internet Movie Database. In many cases this is the only place where you can find information on more obscure actors. I've included the exact path to the actors mentioned here, but for others you should do a search yourself. Just don't forget to tip me on native actors or artists I've forgotten or don't know about. Also, the IMDb filmographies are seldom complete, sometimes downright inaccurate.
